Moisturizing Mermaid Hair Spray DIY Recipe

Winter can wreak havoc on your hair!  I’ve been experiencing this a lot this year.  My hair has become so dry and staticky that the only way I can deal with it is to throw it up in a ponytail.  I love wearing my hair down, so I knew I had to do something to regain control over my hair.

“The dry and cold weather that accompanies winter can be very damaging to your hair. The hair tends to become dry during this time of the year. Indoor heating and the freezing outdoors are conditions that can make your hair susceptible to dryness and static.”

My hair hasn’t felt dry enough that I felt I needed to use a hair mask, but I knew it needed something.  I only use all-natural products on my hair.  No chemicals.  And no heat.  My husband and I make our own shampoo bars which definitely help my hair to stay super healthy and nourished.  So, when I need a little something extra for my hair I start looking up recipes.

A few weeks ago I came across this awesome recipe for a hair spray called Mermaid Hair.  Made with only four simple ingredients that have tons of benefits for your hair, I knew that not only would it restore moisture to my hair but would also be super easy to make.  Best part was I had almost all the ingredients already in the house!

Pure Aloe Vera Juice

The original recipe called for a witch hazel.  That was the one ingredient I did not have.  But, I knew it could be easily substituted for another base that would have numerous benefits for my hair.  I was debating between coconut oil and 100% pure aloe vera juice.  After doing some research, I decided to use the aloe vera juice.  I highly recommend George’s 100% Aloe Vera and you can easily find it at your local health food store.  I have found it at Vitamin Shoppe.

“Aloe vera juice comes from the aloe vera plant and contains 32 vitamins and minerals, 75 nutrients and hundreds of active enzymes. Many people associate aloe vera with treating burns and sunburned skin. While it’s great for these issues, aloe vera juice can also benefit your hair when applied topically.

Aloe vera juice contains enzymes and anti-inflammatory properties that sooth and moisturize an itchy scalp.  The alkaline in aloe vera juice balances the pH level of the hair, which promotes healthy new growth.  Aloe vera juice is a good conditioning agent. It adds shine to the hair and controls frizz. The vitamins and minerals in aloe vera juice strengthen hair, add luster “

Aloe vera juice provided all the benefits that I was looking for in a moisturizing hair spray, so I knew it would make an excellent base for my Mermaid Hair Spray.

Essential Oils

The other three ingredients for this recipe are pure essential oils: lavender, cedarwood, and rosemary all of which offer their own amazing hair care benefits.  Essential oils are AMAZING for your hair.  I use them all the time in my own homemade shampoo bars.

Lavender

“Studies have shown that lavender oil possesses hair growth-promoting effects.

Lavender oil has antimicrobial properties, [and can help] soothe the scalp and heal dry skin and hair.”

Rosemary

“A recent study published in the International Journal of Biotechnology shows that rosemary had superior antibacterial and anti-inflammatory values compared to other herbs like oregano, spearmint, thyme, peppermint and basil. The antioxidants in rosemary essential oil help combat free radical damage that people today face at increased levels due to pollution and the usage of harsh chemical products. The rich levels of antioxidants in rosemary oil help prevent hair loss and contribute to faster hair growth.

One of the most important qualities of rosemary that make it great for hair growth is that it is a powerful stimulant, which when applied to the scalp induces blood circulation to the hair follicles. When the hair follicles are supplied with a greater amount of nutrient-rich blood, faster and healthier hair growth occurs.”

Cedarwood

“Cedarwood essential oil can stimulate the hair follicles and increase circulation to the scalp. This contributes to hair growth.

[It can also help] reduce a dry or flaky scalp. Cedarwood stimulates the scalp and increases circulation.”

100% healthy.  Nothing fake.  And completely safe for you to use on your hair.  That’s why I love making my own products.  I have complete control over what I put on my hair/body and use in my products.  No chemicals.  No unknown ingredients.  Just 100% pure.

I took an 8oz spray bottle and mixed up my Mermaid Hair Spray.  After I took a shower and towel dried my hair, I sprayed my hair from the roots on down and then brushed it through.  Then I let my hair air dry.

Now that my hair is completely dry, it feels super smooth, healthy, completely moisturized and best of all… NO STATIC FINALLY!!!!  If you are struggling with the winter air wreaking havoc on your hair, give Mermaid Hair Spray a try!
