Life Is An Adventure – Go With The Flow!

Ever have one of those days where you have a bunch of plans, but something happens that sends your day in a whole other direction instead?  You can do one of two things when this happens.  You can either A) get upset that the day isn’t going as planned or B) decide to go with the flow.

My husband had off today and we had a lot of plans.  It was going to be Family Fun Day.  The day was to begin, at least for my husband, at 5am.  He was planning on going hunting, and on his way home stop at the farm to get our raw milk.  Once he got home from hunting, roughly around 9ish this morning, we were going to load up the car with our bikes and head north.  We had researched different Rail to Trail bike paths and wanted to go explore a new one.  The plan after bike riding was to have lunch then stop at my husband’s grandmother’s house.  And after that, we were going to come home, make yogurt, and relax for the rest of the day.  But, all that went straight out the window early this morning.

So my husband got up at 5am as planned.  He got ready to go hunting, and I got up for a bit with the girls to see him off.  Once my husband left the girls and I went back into the bedroom to go back to sleep for a bit.  It was super early after all.  Next thing I know, I hear my husband come back in the house, he takes his shoes off and comes into the bedroom.  “You’re back already?”  I asked him.  “The car wouldn’t start,” he said as he got back in bed.  “What’s wrong?” I asked him.  “I think it’s the starter,” he said.

And this is where our day veered off track.  My husband did some research on his phone, and then headed outside to confirm that it was indeed the starter.  I again laid back down with the girls and slept for awhile longer.  When my husband came back upstairs, he woke me up and asked if I could come help him.  He confirmed that yes it was the starter that went in his car and that our local auto parts store had it in stock.  So I got dressed for the day and headed outside to help him remove the starter from his car.  Good thing my husband is handy!  We never need to take our cars into a shop to be fixed.  He does all the work himself and he’s truly amazing at it.  And whatever he doesn’t know, he will learn and master really quick.

Once the starter was removed from his car, we got in my car and headed to the local auto parts store to get the new starter.  After picking up the new starter we stopped at the farm to get our milk and then came home.  We put the new starter in his car, and all was fixed by 12:30 pm.  But, our plans for Family Fun Day got pushed to the back burner until another day.  We still went to his grandmother’s house, and we still came home and made yogurt and relaxed, but hunting and bike riding were out for the day.

Sometimes, things happen that you can’t control.  Instead of getting mad or frustrated that your day wasn’t going according to plan, take a step back, breathe, and view it as an adventure.  When it’s an adventure you never know what is going to happen next, or where you will end up next.  Hunting and bike riding can always happen another day, but getting your car fixed and back on the road takes top priority.  So our day didn’t go as planned.  That didn’t mean we didn’t still have fun.  It was just a different kind of fun.  And living M.U.D. is always about embracing the adventures in life, even if they are unexpected.

  1. This is a great post.
I think I need to alter my plans most days. Something unexpected normally turns up especially with a large family.
When this happens I’ll normally take a deep breath, adjust and move on. Life’s a challenge but a great and interesting one.
