Lava Lamps For Anxiety Relief

I have S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder).  Autumn and Winter are always hard seasons for me.  The weather cools down and I can’t be outside as much.  The days get shorter.  It gets darker earlier.  Autumn and Winter are always a time when my anxiety/depression gets a little worse.  It’s also at this time of year when I make sure to use my essential oil diffuser daily with uplifting scents, make sure I use my Happy Lite, and the most interesting thing of all, use my Lava Lamp to help me relax.

Last winter, while I was struggling, it somehow hit me that I should look into a Lava Lamp.  I had one when I was a kid, and I loved it, but it had never occurred to me that it could help me relax and help with my anxiety.  The more I thought about it, the more it made sense.  There is something so calming, so magical about watching a Lava Lamp as wax blobs dance around in the glass dome.  I decided to buy myself a Lava Lamp with blue liquid and yellow wax and see if it really could help with my anxiety.

I set my Lava Lamp up in my bedroom on top of my dresser and started using it nightly.  If I couldn’t fall asleep right away, I would look at it, and watch the wax change shapes.  It would help me calm down my mind enough that I found I would quickly fall asleep.  There was one particular time last winter that really stands out in my mind.

I had a really bad cold.  Usually, if I get sick, my anxiety gets really bad because I don’t like not being able to control how I am feeling.  That lack of control sets my anxiety sky rocketing.  Early one morning my husband left for work, and I was lying in bed with my girls.  All of a sudden, because I felt so sick, my heart started racing.  I felt like I was going to faint.  I felt like I couldn’t breathe.  Just as I was about to pick up my phone and call my husband, a little voice said to me, “Look at the Lava Lamp.”  So I did.  I laid there, watching the wax magically dance.  Up and down.  Breathe in.  Breathe out.  And within a few seconds, I started to feel calmer.  I just focused on the Lava Lamp and it was amazing how quickly it helped to diffuse my anxious feelings.

It’s really amazing how a Lava Lamp isn’t just a novelty item.  It can also be used as a meditation/anxiety reliever.  They aren’t expensive.  They are beautiful.  And they are easy to set up.  Sometimes it’s the smallest little thing that can make a huge difference.
