Shampoo Bars? What is that? Can you really use a bar of soap to wash your hair? I used to ask these questions all the time. I thought shampoo bars were weird. Why would you wash your hair with a bar of soap? As I started to embrace living an all-natural lifestyle, I came to embrace shampoo bars and just how amazing they are!
Did you know that liquid shampoo, what everyone is used to today, wasn’t invented until 1927? [source] And it wasn’t until 1936 when PH balanced liquid shampoo became available? [source] Before liquid shampoo was available, what did people use to wash their hair? Bar soap. It was the original shampoo. But, regular bar soap can be harsh on your hair and your scalp. Now-a-days shampoo bars are formulated with ingredients that are good, healthy, and safe for your hair and scalp. They are so amazing in fact that most times you do not need to use a conditioner afterwards! I used to use conditioner all the time, but since switching to using shampoo bars to wash my hair, I haven’t had to use any conditioner at all and my hair doesn’t miss it!
But, why would you want to use a shampoo bar? Is it really better for you than liquid commercially available shampoo? Consider this:
“Petroleum based Detergents did not enter the picture till the 1950’s and then was quickly promoted by huge corporations with lots of money to nearly entirely replace soap. Detergents are great for cleaning inanimate objects like Automobile engines, dirty floors and dishes, but these companies didn’t stop there. They came up with detergent based products that were designed to be used daily by people and pets like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, bubble bath and many other such consumable products. Only now we are finding out how really bad detergents are for people. Allergies, Sensitivities, Allergic Reactions, and especially all of the different forms of cancer that afflict us today.”
Like most things in my life now, I much rather use all-natural solutions. I rather know where my products come from and that they are healthy for me. Over the past few years my husband and I have experimented and developed our own shampoo bars. We formulate them with different oils and essential oils that are good and healthy for your hair, scalp, and health. We are constantly researching and experimenting. I absolutely LOVE making our own shampoo bars, and my hair has never been healthier. It’s so easy to brush now! And shampoo bars lather up really well.
But, what do we do if we need a shampoo bar and just don’t have the time to make a batch of our own? That’s where J.R.Liggett’s comes into play.
I found J.R.Liggett’s about a year ago in a local health food store. I liked that it was a bar shampoo, but many “bar shampoos” out on the market today contain ingredients that aren’t all-natural and that aren’t good for you. J.R.Liggett’s is not like that at all. In-fact, it’s the closest to homemade you can get without making it yourself!
“J.R. Liggett was first introduced to making soap at the very early age of five. His Great Aunt Ann who lived in Denman, Nebraska had him help her make her yearly batch of soap.
This soap was completely utilitarian and used for everything from bathing, dishes, clothes and general cleaning. Aunt Ann cooked down all of the fat, grease and oils she had saved up through the previous year and thus rendered the oils needed to make her soap. She then used her soap through out the next year. This is how it was done in many parts of rural America during the early and mid 20th century.
J.R. really enjoyed the process of making soaps and continued this practical and artistic hobby until about 35 years ago when he discovered an old recipe card stuck in a very old book. The recipe was for “Hair Soap” and caught J.R.’s attention. He made up a batch and the rest is history. One of the finest “all natural” shampoos, not seen for more than 100 years. He started by giving bars to friends and family as gifts for Christmas, birthdays, holidays, what ever the occasion. He soon had people asking for more and more.”
J.R.Liggett’s shampoo bars contain only the most natural ingredients, and nothing else. I absolutely love that there are no artificial fragrances added. I absolutely love that it’s pure. It’s a great alternative to use when my husband and I do not have the time to make our own shampoo bars. In-fact, it’s the only other shampoo I will use on my hair.
J.R.Liggett’s offers many different formulas of their shampoo bars such as:
- Herbal (containing Rosemary, Lavender and Cedarwood essential oils)
- Jojoba & Peppermint
- Moisturizing (containing Vitamin E, Aloe Vera, and Almond Oil)
- Tea Tree and Hemp
- Virgin Coconut & Argan Oil
I have used the Herbal formula and the Virgin Coconut & Argan Oil formula and absolutely love them both. Take a look at how simple and natural their ingredient list is for these two shampoo bars:
- Ingredients: Saponified Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Sunflower Oil, RSPO Palm Kernel Oil, Vitamin E, Essential Oils: Rosemary, Lavender and Cedarwood.
Virgin Coconut & Argan Oil
- Ingredients: Saponified Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Sunflower Oil, and RSPO Palm Kernel Oil; Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, Argan Oil, Vitamin E
Another thing I LOVE about shampoo bars is, at least in my experience, they last a lot longer than liquid shampoo. I have had shampoo bars last months for me whereas a bottle of liquid shampoo might only last a few weeks.
Give shampoo bars a try. I can’t say enough wonderful things about them. My hair has never been healthier, stronger, or more manageable. Pick up a bar of J.R.Liggett’s and see just how healthy your hair can be!
