My husband says I am M.U.D. powered by Oola, and I think that’s so true. Living Oola has played a huge part in our life. It’s reshaped how we look at life and how to achieve our dreams. It’s reshaped how we look at money, how we spend our free time, etc… Oola has touched every facet of our life and because of that we are now living M.U.D. which is built around Oola principles.
If you don’t know what Oola is, check out my previous post Finding Balance. To catch you up, I’m going to give you a little crash course in Oola.
“What is Oola®? Oola is a state of awesomeness. It’s living a life that is balanced and growing in the seven key areas of health and well-being. It’s unlocking the potential for greatness that lies within each of us. It’s finding true purpose and meaning for your life. The OolaGuys, Dr. Dave Braun (OolaSeeker) and Dr. Troy Amdahl (OolaGuru), have identified seven key areas that people need to balance and grow to live a rich and fulfilled life.”
The OolaGuys, wrote an amazing booked called Oola: Find Balance in an Unbalanced World and I highly recommend it! Oola is all about embracing life, but it’s also so much more than that. It is about balancing life and finding your happiness. Oola talks about finding balance in seven key areas: Faith, Family, Fun, Fitness, Friends, Finance, and Field. It’s completely changed my life. My copy of Oola: Find Balance in an Unbalanced World is literally all highlighted and underlined. So many things spoke to me.
So, what does this have to do with goal planning? Everything. Oola taught my husband and I to always dream big, to write down the things we want in life, and to chase our dreams by breaking things down into smaller steps. At the beginning of 2017 my husband and I sat down with a dry-erase board and wrote down our goals for the year, focusing on the seven key areas of Oola: Faith, Family, Fun, Fitness, Friends, Finance, and Field. After we were done writing down our goals for the year, we hung it up on the refrigerator so we can constantly see it. We wrote some things down on there that we had no clue how we were going to accomplish, but we knew that for 2017 we were going to try really hard to make all our goals a reality.
Every so often, my husband or I will go up to our goal board and read out each goal. And then we discuss if we’ve met the goal, exceeded the goal, or are still working towards it. I have to say it’s amazing how much we’ve accomplished! We actually just accomplished step one of a goal that we had that was more a dream when we wrote it down than a reality. Under our Fitness category we wrote down “bike ride”. But neither of us had bikes. Because I made a little extra money photographing my first wedding, I decided to get both my husband and I bikes! Step one towards bike riding complete! Step two is next Family Fun Day going bike riding!!! And that will be one goal down! Another goal becoming a reality!
So, what are some of the things we wrote down as goals for the year? And how have we done so far, eight months in? Here’s a preview of some of our goals for 2017:
- go to the gym at least 3x/week for 30 min
- take hikes
- bike ride
We’ve been doing really well with going to the gym at least three times a week. There are some weeks where my husband’s schedule is insane, so it might be less than three, but the important thing is we try and most weeks we meet and exceed that goal.
My husband and I have been on a few hikes this season. Not as much as last Spring and Summer as it’s rained a lot. But we have gotten outside and explored. This is still very much a goal in progress since we definitely want to hike more.
And bike riding, as you already know, we’ve made the first step towards making this goal a reality. How awesome is that?
- save $ for couch
- put extra $ in savings
- keep living debt free
The couch goal is still very much a dream. We need a new couch, but it’s not as high of a priority now. We have since decided that a new couch would be nice, but we can wait. It stays on our goals though because honestly, who knows? We might get a new couch somehow. We might get some money we weren’t planning on. We didn’t know how we were going to go bike riding, and now we have bikes. You never know.
Every month we make sure to put extra money in savings. Even if it’s just a little bit. Every little bit adds up. This is still a goal in progress and is honestly a lifelong goal.
Keep living debt free is another lifelong goal. My husband and I went debt free completely three years ago. We haven’t had credit cards in three years. And honestly, we don’t really miss it. Our life is so much less stressful now without debt hanging over our head. We are 100% debt free and it’s amazing! It’s honestly one of the best things we have done. And we continue to stay debt free.
- Family Fun Days
- photo days
As you all know, Family Fun Days are a huge must in our M.U.D. life and we make sure to have at least one Family Fun Day a week.
We haven’t done many photo days yet this Summer. My husband is a photographer too. But, it’s definitely on our list of things to do.
My husband and I are always having adventures. We have met and exceeded this goal!
And unplugging we try very hard to make a reality. It’s hard sometimes with technology all around us now-a-days, but we try. During dinner we unplug. On Family Fun Days, while we are doing things, we unplug. It’s important to disconnect and live in the now, and not live through a computer screen 24/7/365.
- Have a good work/life balance
- “Do what you love, love what you do!”
Field according to Oola is your job/what you do.
My husband and I strive to have a good work/life balance. We have definitely met this goal and exceeded it. We don’t live to work, we work to live. When we come home, work is left at the workplace. It’s a part of our lives, but it’s not our whole lives. It’s not who we are.
“Do what you love, love what you do!” Ok, I know this sounds like a weird goal. But to us it basically means loving every part of what we are doing. Are we happy at work? Are we happy with where we are headed? And it’s not even just work. We do so many other things that make us happy. My husband welds, and builds things on the side. I do art. We strive to do things that we love and that don’t seem like work. It’s pursuing a passion wholeheartedly, whether that’s making soap, learning more about nutrition, sharing what you’ve learned, welding, building things, art, etc… “Do what you love, love what you do!” If it’s not serving you in some way, then it’s time to reevaluate.
- “Be bold enough to believe/dream big!”
To us this means just always believing in ourselves. To chase our wild and crazy dreams and have faith that all our goals will eventually become realities. This is a reminder to us to always keep faith, and to no matter what, always dream big.
Honestly, this is the one “F” of Oola that we have no goals for. We were literally stumped by this one. We believe it’s quality not quantity. We have a few close friends, but we don’t surround ourselves by a ton of people. Maybe we will eventually figure out a goal to write down for 2017 under Friends. Maybe we will come up with one for 2018.
- day trips
- be outside / hang with babies
My husband and I always go on little day trips as part of our Family Fun Days. This is a goal we have definitely exceeded.
We are also always outside, and have taken our babies to the dog park in town a few times this summer. We have definitely met this goal as well.
When we look at our goal list for 2017 we see how many goals we have made a reality. There’s a few we are still working towards, but it’s really amazing and feels great to see how much we have accomplished. Some of our big goals (like bike riding) we had no idea how we were going to turn into a reality, but we did!
Goal planning is amazing because it helps you to set yourself up for greatness! Fill your goal board with your dreams, and hopes for the coming year and see what happens. Manifest your dreams! Chase your happiness! And be amazed at all that comes to pass just by putting out into the universe what you want to happen.
We live M.U.D. powered by Oola. It’s an awesome way to live!
