If there’s one thing I have a huge problem with, it’s staying hydrated. I’ve had this problem ever since I could remember. As a child my mom would send me to school with a bagged lunch, complete with a juice box or bottle of water. At the end of the day, I would come home with the juice box or bottle of water sitting untouched in my lunchbox. I hadn’t had anything to drink all day, and I didn’t even realize it. For some odd reason, realizing that I need to drink and stay hydrated just doesn’t come naturally to me, unless I’m borderline dehydrated. And I’ve gotten dehydrated more times than I can count.
“Staying hydrated is one of the most important ways to stay healthy and maintain a proper body weight, but most of us are dehydrated without realizing it.
Without sufficient water in your body, your cells get congested, your skin can’t detox, and your bladder and kidneys won’t work properly. You’ll feel tired and eat more, too. Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy.
Drinking more water is one of the safest, healthiest ways to detox the body. What’s more, when you drink more often, you will feel satiated”
Lately, I’ve found myself slipping into old habits. It will be dinnertime before I realize that I haven’t had anything to drink all day! This is not good and I know that. I knew something had to change and I had to start making staying hydrated a priority. I needed to make the Mindful Unique Decision to create a new healthy habit, and I needed a plan.
There are “smart” water bottles that are out on the market, and I’ve looked at them. Most “smart” water bottles link to an app that helps to remind you to drink water, as well as helping you figure out how many ounces of water a day you should be drinking. They look interesting, but they are expensive. Also, I knew that this type of device was not a good option for me.
I get fixated on numbers, which is why I no longer have a scale in the house. I used to fixate on the number of calories I was putting in my body. It took my health coach awhile to get me to realize that numbers weren’t important, food was. I’ve tried apps in the past that are free to download that remind you to drink water, but again it’s a numbers game and I find myself getting into competition with myself. If I didn’t reach my goal, I would get mad at myself and I would get down. And that’s not M.U.D. Living M.U.D. means making healthy, mindful decisions and creating good habits. So, I knew I had to stay away from numbers because that is a trigger of mine.
So what to do? I know most people would say just get a water bottle and start drinking, but again I literally don’t remember, even if I have a glass or bottle of water sitting next to me. I honestly don’t think about it. I knew I needed to create a new healthy habit, and I needed help to do this. While researching online I came across Ulla. It was the perfect little device that might just help me.Unlike “Smart” Water Bottles, Ulla is a little device that attaches to any cup or bottle with the use of a silicone band. It doesn’t sync to an app. It doesn’t calculate how much you should drink in a day. All it does is gently remind you to drink. How? Ulla contains sensors which can sense when you pick up your cup or bottle and tilt it to drink. Once you put your cup or bottle down it blinks once to let you know that it registered you drank water, or tea, or any beverage. The instruction book that it came with says to think of this little blink of light as if Ulla is saying, “Good job.” I like that. Very positive. Ulla then starts calculating once you put your cup or bottle down. If 30-40 minutes have gone by without any movement, Ulla gently starts flashing reminding you to drink. It’s simple and can create a healthy habit in a positive way.
Ulla’s battery lasts for 6 months, so it doesn’t require any charging. The battery is replaceable. Ulla also comes in many colors and a few patterns so you are sure to find one that speaks to you. And, when it’s dark, Ulla goes into sleep mode. It will wake up again once it is light and senses movement.
“Founded in 2015, Ulla Labs is the design brains behind Ulla, a smart and engaging contemporary wellness tool that helps people live a healthier life. Headaches, fatigue, obesity and weak immune systems were just some of the issues we wanted to address when we began working to create something new – a unique product that would respond to real health and lifestyle concerns that affect everyone.
Our aim was to make Ulla incredibly simple to use, with end-users and their hopes and habits foremost in mind. As a result, everyone – from the technically unengaged to notification-swamped gadget enthusiasts – gets the full benefit of our innovative product. We all now drink more water, throughout our entire day – and feel better for it.
Ulla employs drink detection, ambient and proximity technologies, and reminds, even motivates people to hydrate regularly with a subtle yet effective visual alert. They say water is life, motivation is what gets you started, and habit is what keeps you going. We firmly believe that Ulla, the hydration coach, is the missing link between all three.”
Today was my first day using Ulla. So what did I think? So far I’m absolutely loving it! I got a notice on my phone that my package was waiting for me at the post office. When I was on my lunch break at work, I walked over there to pick it up. I was so excited! Then, I returned to the library and opened up my package.
Ulla is so cute! I immediately grabbed a water bottle, filled it up and activated Ulla. Then I went about my day. And you know what? It helped me drink more than I normally would. I took my water bottle around the library as I did various tasks. I drank here and there, but if I went too long without drinking Ulla would gently blink at me reminding me to take a sip. I got Ulla in the afternoon. During my entire morning I hadn’t had anything to drink. By the time I left work this afternoon, I had almost drank an entire water bottle! That’s really good for me!
So far, Ulla seems like that perfect little tool that I need to start creating a healthy hydration habit, and it was only $25 so it’s super affordable. I will let everyone know how it goes in the coming weeks as I continue using Ulla.
