You know where the best place to get ice cream is? Warwick, NY at the top of Mt. Peter. On a perfect summer day you can not only get an incredible view of the town of Warwick, but also experience the most amazing sunset while eating fresh, homemade ice cream. The line might extend out the door, but the wait (which is never very long) is well worth it.
It’s been a crazy busy week and my husband and I haven’t gotten to do Family Fun Day yet this week. Currently, Family Fun Day is planned for this Saturday (yay!). So, last night to break up our crazy busy week we had a Family Fun Night and took a beautiful ride up the mountain to Bellvale Farms Creamery which is not only the First Dairy of Distinction in Orange County, but is also voted #2 among Top 10 Ice Cream Parlor’s in the United States on Trip Advisor and voted within the top 5 in the Hudson Valley.
Although my husband and I focus on eating clean, you still need to have fun… and hey Ice Cream is a ton of fun especially on a summer night. Not to mention delicious! And actually, Bellvale is very M.U.D. because the ice cream is made right there in small batches! In fact, Bellvale Farms Creamery runs an actual working farm that can be found straight down the road from the ice cream shop.
“Since 1819, Bellvale Farms has provided fine quality dairy products throughout the Hudson Valley region throughout seven continuous generations of family farming!
During October 2011, Bellvale Farms was presented with the Sustainable Agriculture Award from Orange Environment. Bellvale Farms received this prestigious award for its “Commitment to sustainable farming practices including diversifying grain crops, working with the Warwick Valley Winery to provide them with locally produced grains, and returning their dairy products and crops as value-added products to benefit the local community.”
Bellvale Farms participates in a rigorous program of water and soil conservation.”
Although Bellvale Farms Creamery is a small family business, they offer many amazing flavors. You can always find the usual flavors such as chocolate, vanilla or strawberry. But, they are extremely well-known for their custom flavors which can be found on rotation. Some of their well-known and well-loved flavors include:
Bellvale Bog: Dark chocolate ice cream with brownie dough and fudge swirl
Black Dirt Blast: Chocolate coffee ice cream with fudge and toffee pieces
Great White Way: White chocolate ice cream with dark chocolate chunks and raspberry swirl
S’mores: Graham cracker ice cream with marshmallow and chocolate swirl that takes you back to the campfire
In the Stix: French custard ice cream with Twix® candy bar pieces
Pumpkin: Made with real pumpkin and a touch of spice – just like pumpkin pie
Meadow Muffins: Brownie pieces and peanut butter swirl in dark chocolate ice cream
Calf Trax: Vanilla ice cream with peanut butter swirl and mini peanut butter cups
Before we found out about my problem with gluten, I used to LOVE Bellvale Bog. I would get it every single time! I also had Meadow Muffins once and was ecstatic to find it on the menu. Of course, I can’t have any of these flavors now, but I do remember how amazing they were!
Besides ice cream (which by the way they make over 50 flavors of), you can also get ice cream cake, milkshakes, ice cream pies, and homemade waffle cones. They also offer yogurt, sorbet and low-carb ice cream.
And want to see where the milk for the ice cream comes from? On weekends in the summer you can take a farm tour! From June through October, on Sundays at 12:30 pm you can tour Bellvale Farms Dairy and meet the cows and learn about Bellvale Farms. That’s one thing I love. Knowing where your food comes from, and Bellvale will show you. I haven’t done the tour yet, although I say every year I’m going to take the tour. Maybe this year I actually will.
It’s so much fun getting ice cream and then sitting outside and enjoying the amazing view from the top of Mt. Peter. After we are done eating, we love getting in the car and driving down the mountain to see the cows grazing in the pasture. This year Bellvale recently expanded the ice cream shop to better serve the flocks of people that gather there on summer days and nights.
And, if you’re hiking the Appalachian Trail you can stop at Bellvale too because the AT literally passes right by Bellvale!
If you live in the Hudson Valley, if you are hiking the AT, stop at Bellvale. You won’t be disappointed!
This is my own personal review and I have not received any compensation for it.
