Making Mindful Unique Decisions doesn’t just apply to you, it applies to everyone in your family including your furry children. I have two furry babies myself, Roxie (an English Bulldog who is 7 years old) and Lani (an Australian Labradoodle who will be 6 years old next month). They are my daughters and I treat them as such. I would do anything for them.
I’ve always been aware of the pet food industry and the importance of reading product labels, but my knowledge really didn’t extend past knowing to look out for “by-products” which is a common addition to pet food.
“By-products (for example, chicken by-products or beef by-products): clean non-rendered “parts”, other than meat, derived from slaughtered mammals. It includes, but is not limited to lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, blood, bone, fatty tissue and stomachs and intestines freed of their contents. This is a cheap way for pet food companies to keep the protein levels “high” (although not high quality) while keeping food production costs low.”
Sounds disgusting, no? I always made sure to never buy pet food containing “by-products”, and most companies include this ingredient in their pet food. I would research foods that did not include these ingredients by searching on the web and using dogfoodadvisor.com. I realized how important this was especially after the dog food recalls of a few years ago.
For a long time I used a high quality, big name, dry dog food and my girls liked it, but Roxie’s allergies started getting bad, even though it was a grain-free food. Her face would get red, she would itch like crazy, her ears would get infected, and she had awful tear stains. Bullies are known for their allergies, but I knew it could be food related. I knew I needed to change something so my baby would not be so itchy. But, it was more than that too. The more I embraced an all-natural life, the more I became aware of what I was feeding my girls, and the more I became aware, the more research I started doing into different food companies.
One day, during my research I came across The Honest Kitchen. I was really impressed with not only their website, but also all the reviews they had. I loved that their food said it was made in the USA, was 100% Human Grade, meets nutritional levels established by the AAFCO (The Association of Animal Feed Control Officers), that it’s minimally processed, and contains whole foods! I had never heard of a pet food that actually had gotten FDA certified to label itself as 100% Human Grade. That really peaked my interest.
I was originally thinking of feeding my girls a raw food diet, but The Honest Kitchen seemed like a good, convenient food and I decided to give it a try. I bought a bunch of sample packs for $1.00 each from their website and eagerly awaited their arrival in the mail.
The Honest Kitchen’s foods are dehydrated meaning that all you need to do is add water and let it sit for a few minutes. When the sample packets came, I had no idea what my girls would think, but I mixed it up for them. And would you believe they ran to their bowls and ate that food like it was going out of style?!? They absolutely LOVED it which made me really happy.
Over the past two years my girls have tried many of Honest Kitchen’s different flavors and have liked them all. They also love their treats. I love that I’m feeding my girls a super healthy food that I could even eat, if I really wanted to. Right now my girls are eating Revel – Whole Grain Chicken formula. I buy a 10 lb box, which once hydrated equals 40 lbs of food! Since we’ve switched to The Honest Kitchen, Roxie’s allergies have greatly improved. Sure, sometimes she’s itchy, especially during allergy season, but her face is no longer red, the tear stains she used to get are gone, she no longer itches her ears like crazy. It’s amazing what a difference it’s made, not to mention that both of my girls coats are so amazingly soft and healthy! And even two years later, you should see how excited my girls get when it’s meal time!
Take a look at the pure, natural ingredients that are in Revel for yourself. Isn’t it amazing?
